SARASOTA, FL – I headed down south to Sarasota County this past week to experience the 20th annual Savor Sarasota, a restaurant month that features dozens of restaurants throughout the area with a focus on showcasing local restaurants and quality food that is a staple of the area.

Pop’s Sunset Grill: The visit stated with a lunch visit to Pop’s Sunset Grill on the water. This was my first time visiting Nokomis Beach, I hardly travel that far south when I am in Sarasota County, and I am glad i did. Their Savor Sarasota menu was incredible delicious from their shrimp rangoons to the burrata salad, this food is not what you expect for a tiki beach bar and the awards on the wall when you enter the restaurant supports that. I loved the water and the wildlife including a number of birds we saw while sitting on the deck. The seating is well-shaded and air-conditioned, so you are still comfortable even when sitting outdoors. I would definitely return here for food in the future and to watch the sunsets. The cocktails were also great without being too sweet or filled with too much juice. After our meal we headed to Nokomis Beach across the bridge nearby and it was a sight to see. Offshore Tapas and Wine Bar: We stopped here for happy hour at voco Sarasota, by IHG, which is also the hotel we were staying at during our visit. We tried the Dragonfruit Jam Tapas from the Savor with a paired orange bourbon libation and it was great. The head bartender said he came out of retirement after decades in the food industry to run the bar and he was a pleasure to converse with. The hotel was recently renovated so there were not many people, but if you are staying in the property, I would recommend it. 1223 Blvd of the Arts, Sarasota, FL 34236.

Michael’s On East: I have dined at Michael’s On East since I was a young food writer in college and it hasn’t changed too much as a fine dining establishment. The menu is still serving gourmet eats and has a busy restaurant and bar with top-tier servers who offer world-class service and an eclectic menu with food from around the world. The Savor Sarasota menu is more than a deal at $45 per person before gratuity/tax, we loved the short ribs and the chicken schnitzel (that even had spaetzle and cabbage). Michael is still taking guests around the world and a server shared that his recent obsession is Maine, which inspired a blueberry ice cream dessert we had at the end of our meal. I recommend Michael’s On East to anyone enjoying a special time whether it’s a date, anniversary, or a gathering with good friends. Bistro – Sarasota Art Museum: I have heard about this bistro from PR folks over the last few years, but have been unable to attend. I was not sure what to expect really. It was after my visit that I learned the backstory of this restaurant, surviving opening during the pandemic and run by Tampa native Chef Kaytlin Dangaran, which is impressive on its own. Think a Panera but make it local. They offered a tartine and chocolate mousse for Savor Sarasota, both were good and had interesting flavors with a fresh taste, but their salmon sandwich we tried was actually the star of the show when we visited. With dozens of dining options, there is plenty more to see and experience in Sarasota County and I had a blast dining and trying both new and old restaurants alike. Programming like Savor Sarasota is great to get people to experience new things at an approachable price and one thing that was clear was that chef’s and owners still put everything they have into the restaurant month regardless. I recommend it.

The stadium would anchor Ybor Harbor, a 33-acre mixed-use development featuring residential, retail, restaurants, hotels, and office towers housing USL’s headquarters. USL is based in Tampa Bay with more than 120 employees and is the largest and fastest-growing soccer organization in North America, with 38 professional men’s teams, a new men’s Division One league launching in 2028, and eight teams competing in the USL Super League, a first division women’s league that debuted in 2024 with the Tampa Bay Sun as one of its founding clubs.

“This project will provide a premier new headquarters for the USL — one that reflects the energy, ambition, and growth of our leagues,” said Alec Papadakis, USL Chief Executive Officer.

“By collaborating with Darryl Shaw and Tampa Bay Sun FC, we’re accelerating the growth of women’s soccer while creating lasting benefits for Tampa Bay. The stadium development will be a place where fans and community come together and celebrate our sport – here in Tampa Bay and across the country.”

The USL Super League recently completed its inaugural season, with the Tampa Bay Sun FC winning the championship on June 14. The Sun finished the season with an overall record of 14 wins, 10 ties and 6 losses and a league home best record.

Every Super League match streams nationally on NBC’s Peacock, which reaches 41 million subscribers, with additional coverage across Canada, Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean, bringing exposure to Tampa Bay both domestically and internationally.

The stadium would also serve as a premier year-round venue for sporting events, concerts, festivals, and community gatherings, serving as a central hub for Tampa Bay residents and visitors. It would also host select U.S. National Team and international matches for both men and women.

“Tampa is a city of champions — and now we’re dreaming even bigger,” said Tampa Mayor Jane Castor.

“The stadium would deliver a place that captures our city’s energy, inspires the next generation, and stands as a national symbol of what happens when cities invest boldly in women’s sports and inclusive economic growth.”

The stadium vision, designed by The Beck Group, does not yet have an anticipated start date or cost.

Much of Tampa Bay is still flooded and without power. 3 million people were without power earlier this morning. My thoughts are with everyone at home and I hope to help support recovery in the area and throughout our state.

I checked out First Watch in Brandon and had their new Maple Bacon Croissant Sandwich with millionaire’s bacon and it is incredibly delicious. The croissant buns are soft and the bacon is just right. The chicken sausage is a nice touch as well. I hope this one stays on the menu in the future.

I went to Bonchon Chicken yesterday at 2320 E Fletcher Ave. The Korean Fried Chicken chain has been in Florida for some time, but just recently started its descent into Tampa. Usually once they enter an area they expand quickly. This location is just minutes from USF and the I-275 Fletcher exit. The last time I had Bonchon Chicken was in Seoul, South Korea, when I was living there and going to Yonsei University.

So how does this chicken stack up? Pretty well! The chicken wings are very crispy and juicy on the inside. Usually I enjoy Soy Garlic the best, but these were a bit salty so I liked the Yangnyeom (spicy and sweet) wings the best. These were finger-licking good. The double-frying of K.F.C. always hits!

They happened to be giving away free t-shirts that day to anyone who came in and the former college student in me loves that. Anyway, the food was delicious and the attendant at the register was so hospitable and friendly.

5. New modern Asian cafe opening in St. Petersburg: An all new cafe is opening soon St. Petersburg at 189 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. N. Drinks will change seasonally.
