77th Annual Fiesta Day happening in Ybor City this weekend: The 77th Annual Fiesta Day is happening this Saturday, Feb. 24 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Ybor City along Seventh Avenue. The festival is a celebration of all the heritages to have made up Ybor City for over 100 years. USF Men’s Basketball team continues win streak with Wednesday victory against UTSA: The University of South Florida Men's Basketball team beat UTSA on Wednesday 66-61, extending their win streak to 12 games. It is the longest win streak in program history. Selton Miguel posted a game-high of 17 points as well as six rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Next the Bulls will face SMU at Yuengling Center in Tampa on Sunday, Feb. 25 at noon. Tickets are available online for the game. (gousfbulls.com)
Controversial bill limiting wind energy sponsored by Tampa elected official passes committee: Tampa Republican Senator Jay Collins is sponsoring a bill that will limit offshore wind energy and remove barriers for fuel terminals in towns. Climate change activists and Democrats are questioning the bill and its impact. The bill passed out of committee. (wmnf.org)
Celebrated flamenco dancer who fled Cuba now living in Tampa: A famed flamenco dancer who fled from political oppression in Cuba named Irene Rodriguez Compañia is now living in South Tampa. The dancer previously had hundreds of students and has received the Order "Isabel La Católica" from Spain. Compañia is now rebuilding her life and dreams at Brucie Klay's Dance Center in South Tampa at 3601 S Manhattan Ave. (wusf.org)
Firefighter who spoke out against racism at Tampa Fire Rescue fired from duty: Tampa Fire Rescue has dismissed a firefighter who spoke out against racism and harassment in February 2023 after an investigation. The city claims the firefighter was allegedly caught forging a signature on paperwork for paramedic training, according to a Tampa Police Department investigation. That discovery does not appear to remove claims of racism at Tampa Fire Rescue and the city said they are separate matters. It is unclear whether the firefighter will appeal the decision or take any action against the city. (abcactionnews.com)
