Construction hurting local business in Tampa Heights: King State is speaking out about city construction impacting their Tampa Heights business located at 520 East Floribraska Ave. The coffee roastery, brewery, and cafe said in a social media posting that construction is not expected to end until Mar. 31 and could kill their local business. King State is planning to bring their issue to the Tampa City Council on Thursday, Jan. 11 at 9 a.m. at 315 East Kennedy Blvd. on the 3rd Floor of Old City City Hall and is asking the community to stand with them. Frontier Airlines brings back 3 Caribbean nonstop routes to TPA this spring: Discount carrier Frontier Airlines is bringing back three nonstop routes from Tampa International Airport to the Caribbean this spring including flights to Santo Domingo, Punta Cana, and Montego Bay. Santo Domingo will return Apr. 10 on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays; Punta Cana will return May 16 on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays; Montego Bay will also return May 16 on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. African-American population declining in St. Petersburg: A new report from Urban Market Analytics has found the African-American population in St. Petersburg has declined 10 percent between 2018 and 2022, while growing in other parts of Pinellas County by 16 percent. The shift comes as the cost of living soars in the area. The population shift increased every year and is accelerating. (stpetecatalyst.com)
Tampa-area public defender plans to challenge legal basis of new Florida pre-trial detention law: Hillsborough Public Defender Julianne Holt plans to challenge the constitutionality of a new pre-trial detention law in Florida this year, according to WMNF. She has held office since 1992 and has over 31 years of service as a public defender in the justice system. Holt says the law is creating a large workload for judges, state attorneys, and public defenders, in addition to forcing more people to spend the night in jail instead of posting bail. (wmnf.org)
